Live-Action "NANA" a Box-Office Hit
The live-action "NANA" film has enjoyed considerable success, grossing a billion yen within a week of its September 3 release. Approximately 1.1 million theater-goers have attended showings.
As mentioned in a previous article, the "NANA" manga (Ai Yazawa - Monthly Cookie / Shueisha) is already extremely popular with the junior high and high school girls of Japan, many of whom enjoy its realistic depiction of the lives of young women and the latest trends. Thirteen manga volumes have been published so far, with total sales exceeding 25 million copies.
Incidentally, the film's theme song, "GLAMOROUS SKY", is performed by Mika Nakashima, one of the movie's main characters. The song debuted in the number one spot on the Oricon record sales ranking.
The "NANA" film looks set to introduce a whole new crop of fans, both male and female, to the popular manga.
