"Yu-Gi-Oh" Applies for Guinness World Record with 15.8 Billion Cards Sold
With "Yu-Gi-Oh" card sales exceeding 15,880,000,000 cards sold, Konami has contacted Guinness and applied for a card game sales world record.
Based on the fictional card game appearing in the Weekly Shonen JUMP manga of the same name (published from 1996-2004), "Yu-Gi-Oh" trading cards were first released in 1999. The game has been released in 45 countries around the world to date, with particularly strong sales in Japan, Northern America, and Europe.
There was also a record-breaking "Yu-Gi-Oh" videogame released in 1998 (17.5 million units sold), and a popular online game allowing players from throughout the world to compete in card game matches.
Konami says it has a variety of "Yu-Gi-Oh"-projects in the works, and it appears that there is still a considerable amount of vitality left in this decade-old series.
