Monday July 2 cont.

Re-joining the gang Risa-chan asked me to call the hotel and cancel Shacho and Mahjong-kun's room - they were going to be delayed another day in Tokyo and would find their own accommodation when they arrived.

I had a really embarrassing time on the phone because I couldn't understand what the woman on the other end of the phone was saying. Good grief I'd only been out of an English speaking country for a little over a year...put it down to tiredness...

We then split into two groups - trying to disperse the English speakers evenly. I took charge of the group with Ogi-bo, Karaoke-man and our unexpected traveling companion S-kun from AIC.

We were the taxi group - the others went to go pick our rental car/tank. The four of us piled into a taxi with a very safe, friendly looking lady taxi driver and asked her to take us to the Long Beach Renaissance Hotel. She soon earned her nickname of "The Granny Taxi Driver from the Fiery Pits of Hell" however as she weaved between trucks on the freeway while telling me that this was the most dangerous part of the freeway in LA (didn't translate that for the boys in the back - their knuckles had already turned white from clutching on for dear life), taking wrong turns and rummaging around in her handbag for maps and piccies of her grandson to show me...

 I managed to direct her to the hotel (amazingly since it was my first time in LA) and we left her a huge tip in the hope that she wouldn't need to threaten anyone else's life that day...

Checked into hotel, managing to secretly score Risa-chan and I a room with an ocean view, had a half an hour shower and watched some crap telly in English for the novelty value. Risa-chan and the rest of the boys turned up and she refreshed while I went down to the pool to work on my depleted nicotine levels. Was chatted up with some corny lines by one of the hotel security, the only useful thing he shared was about a nearby Japanese restaurant. Rushed back to tell the kids but they had already set their little hearts on Taco-Bell.

Did fast food and beer run.

Watched more crap telly.

Passed out.

Tuesday July 3

Risa-chan and I - predictably - woke up at the crack of dawn, went down to the pool where I chain-smoked (damn non-smoking hotel rooms) and swam, while Risa-chan read the paper.

Got some brekky, sorted out some stuff then went down to Nori-kun and Elche-kun's (Canadian slave) room - which soon became known as the ANIMAXIS Operation Headquarters.

We then set off to check out LA - mainly anime shops though mind you. Managed to get lost on the way to Melrose Drive. Kept looking. Stopped and had lunch. Got lost again and ended up back in the same place.

Found it finally and started wandering around, but Mojojojo and I soon got bored with looking at anime shops and ran away to check out the clothes and record stores. Being a speed-shopper I bought a stack of clothes and omiyage and we got really excited about finding (and buying) Japanese beer.

Begged "Dad" to buy me the ostrich skin pants I'd seen at Lords (only $8,000) but he refused.

Sulked.

Risa-chan felt really ill so she crashed on returning - the boys and I hit a local pasta restaurant and being Tokyo children thought we'd go to a bar or play pool or something. Could only find one place - looked daggy so we gave up and returned to the hotel.

Passed out.
