The Great Dangaioh - Special interview
Region: Japan
Category: Anime
Date: 05/22/2001
Interviewers: Risa-chan & Nakayama-san
Interview transcript: Nori-kun
Translated by: Risa-chan & MJ
Edited by: MJ

A - Dangaioh Burst, Dangaioh Frail & Dangaioh Cross. In particular Dangaioh Frail seems to have a quite feminine design - was this intentional?

TH - Regarding the body of the three robots, we had to deal with various restrictions you see. Which one would become the hands or legs for example, these things cause the robots to become very awkward looking. Since Frail and Cross are both driven by girls it seemed only naturally that they have a feminine body shape - it was a conscious design decision. The first designs resembled beer kegs - which was awful - which made you feel a bit sorry for the girls who have to ride in them.(laughs) Besides Burst is controlled by a boy and I think that the design represents this well.

A - What's your favourite thing with regards to mech-design and the work itself this time round?

TH - I have a preference for the mech-design of the earlier series. Much of it had already been decided upon, so they kind of feel like borrowed robots. In this series, I'm still very much fixated on the rocket punch design feature from before, in which my idea was that after the rocket punch has been thrown the arm opens up and a laser beam shoot out from there. So really the current Dangaioh is my favourite. I can't really compare the older series to the new one. Guess that all sounds a bit strange really - to have an impression of your own robots.

A - Will the current series also have the laser beams shooting from the eyes of the robot?

TH - In the latter half of the series the weapons will all "power up". Kuya's hobby is making up all new strange names for the weapons - so we're playing around with that...(laughs)

A - The first episode developed really quickly - a large number of enemy characters appeared, but they were quickly defeated - what was the reason behind this?

TH - There were a lot of gimmicks in it - it looks just like a simple action robot anime, but behind it are a lot of tricks.

Episode one is kind of like a promotion episode. We wanted to attract the viewer's as much as possible - so we first created a typical scene - which we then turned around 180 degrees to surpise people!

So the fact that they were all annihilated was a kind of gimmick.

From episode 2 the main storyline will begin, which was how it was planned. So that's why the main character doesn't speak in the first episode, I just wanted to show the robot action.

A - After watching the first episode I had the feeling that I wanted to see just another 5 minutes of it...

TH - That extra 5 minutes of fighting was cut by AIC. (laughs)

A - I get the impression that the colouring and battle scenes of the robots is quite typical of robot anime in general.

TH - Yes that's right. To some of the generation that saw it I think that it's pretty nostalgic, the new generation hasn't really seen much, and it would make me happy to attract their attention.

A - The apparent boss "Kashimadansei" was beaten pretty easily the first time round.

TH - Kashima appeared in a recollection scene from the previous series. His character is vital to the creation of the new storyline.

A - Are you planning to reveal all of the evil organization?

TH - We didn't want to create a particular evil organization. Actually, I think that that it's considered kind of boring for the same enemy robots to keep turning up every time, which is why they change every show.
