Love Hina - Interview with Yoshiaki Iwasaki

Region: Japan
Category: Anime
Date: 11/07/2001
Interviewer: Nakayama-san
Interview transcript: Nakayama-san
Translated & Edited by: MJ

Of course another big difference between any manga and anime of the same title concerns the pace Mr Iwasaki explained. The reader of a manga will go at their own speed, but in the creation of an anime you have to consider how to show the pace of the action effectively.

Mr. Iwasaki considers the following also to be important when producing an anime - "You have to consider the people who are going to watch it and I think that it's important to create something fun to watch. From the point of view of the Director, I have to like many aspects of the work and make something the viewer can enjoy." He also believes that it's important that the characters are drawn in a way to entertain.

Mr. Iwasaki claims to have no favourites among the "Love Hina" characters, as much as we tried to get him to confess and he commented though that even if he did he would resist the temptation to feature that character more prominently. However later on in the interview he remarked that Su was probably his most favourite character. "She is the most fun character and makes a lot of mechanical devices - to be honest she's the kind of daughter I'd like to have, or perhaps she's more like a little sister, who'd I'd feel comfortable hanging out with." In the anime version the main male character Keitaro has become his ideal and believes him to be a "good guy with morals".

While on morality, the original manga features a lot of "H" (risque) scenes, such as the in the outside bath at Hinata Inn, but Mr Iwasaki that he only included very moderate scenes of this, mainly because anime which is to be shown on TV is quite restricted. Much to the disappointment of "Love Hina" male fans we suspect...
