Wonder
Festival 2000 Summer (page

"Wonder
Showcase is not a garage kit manufacturer. Think of it as an artistic
support system aimed at helping talented young sculptors reach their full
potential."

Another
weekend, another convention!
Another trip to the Tokyo Big Sight convention center!
Today is Sunday, August 20th and it's this year's Wonder Festival. This
means I'm at Japan's largest convention for garage kits and figures. This
is undoubtedly the best place for unknown, yet talented sculptors (professional
creators) and amateur dealers to display their talents. This potential
gateway to a career in modelling of the alternative kind opened its doors
at 10 am sharp, to thousands of people restlessly waiting for the special
event, some even camping out in line from the night before.
This event, as famous
and popular as the Comic Market,
was expecting 30,000 visitors this year.

...but
they couldn't find one in Ruri Hoshino's size

Started by forerunner
to Gainax, 'General Products', and now run by Kaioodo, Wonder Festival
has become the place for selling and exhibiting garage kits from
plastic models, figures, action figures and miniature weapons to life-sized
replicas of weapons, clothes, and other manga, anime, games and popular
fiction related goods.
Because it's somewhere
for garage kit lovers to show off their own versions of favorite characters,
this festival has always been regarded as a place where doujin works are
sold. However, as the "one-day, limited license system" was created, under
which dealers are able to have copyright clearance through the Wonder
Festival Committee, the Doujin works offered are a bit more 'above board'
legally than those sold at Comiket.
This practical system, entitles the owners of both amateur and professional
booths to basically ignore copyright clearance procedures on any character
or series for this particular limited location and period. Regardless
of their make and professionalism, this event gives dealers the chance
to effectively sell their creations as " licensed products", and not just
as "fan art".
